“La Comunidad le debe al P. Charlie una deuda enorme que no puede ser pagada”, dijo el P. John. “Por más de un cuarto de siglo, el P. Charlie ha presentado a muchos jóvenes a los Siervos Misioneros. De hecho, hoy en día casi la mitad de nuestros compañeros ¡fueron reclutados por él! Una placa será colocada en cada una de las cuatro casas de formación de la comunidad en recuerdo de la contribución del P. Charlie.

Luego de un muy bien merecido descanso, el P. Charlie empezará un nuevo ministerio en Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, en Compton, Los Ángeles. El P. Charlie dice: “¡me siento muy honrado al recibir esta placa! y también muy agradecido por el reconocimiento a mi ministerio de parte del P. John, del Consejo y de mi Comunidad.

Desde el 2009 el P. Charlie ha visitado la parroquia durante los festivos, en particular en las navidades, para prestar su ayuda. “Con seguridad va ser de un impacto tremendo y una gran contribución en Compton”, dice el P. John “allí hay un montón de trabajo pastoral y el P. Charlie ¡es la persona perfecta para hacerlo!”

“The Community owes Fr. Charlie a huge debt that cannot be repaid,” says, Fr. John. “For more than a quarter of a century, Fr. Charlie has introduced many young men to the Missionary Servants. In fact as of today, almost half of our confreres were recruited by him!”. A plaque will be placed in each of the Community’s four formation houses in remembrance of Fr. Charlie’s contribution.

After a much deserved break, Fr. Charlie will begin his new ministry at Our Lady of Victory in Compton, Los Angeles. He says, “I’m very honored to receive this plaque! and I’m also very grateful for the recognition of my ministry by Fr. John, the Council, and my Community.

Since 2009, Fr. Charlie has visited the parish over the holidays, particularly at Christmas, to lend a hand. “He’s going to make a tremendous impact and contribution in Compton,” says, Fr. John; “there’s a lot of pastoral work and Fr. Charlie is the right man to do it!”

May the grace and peace of the Holy Spirit be with us forever!

For all Christians, Lent is a time of particular grace. We are given the opportunity to enter more deeply into the Paschal Mystery.

The traditional practice of fasting during Lent can be particularly helpful in entering the spirit of the season. When we fast we are surrendering the illusion that we can somehow satisfy ourselves or make ourselves happy. Instead we accept that fact that God is the one who fills us up, God is the one who gladdens our hearts. We don’t need to grasp after anything or attain anything to live a full and rich life. All we need do is create the open space in our hearts so that God can pour in those graces which the Lord desires to give.

The mystical tradition of fasting teaches us that the spiritual life is the process of awakening to what already is. When we fast we clear away (subtract) the clutter of our lives so that we can recognize the God who lies at the heart of human existence.

Let me suggest a fast: let us refrain from judging ourselves. There is a story that I like about a farmer in China whose son became very upset because their horse had run away. “This is bad news,” he said. “Good news. Bad news. Who knows?” replied the father. The next day their horse returned to the barn with an entire herd of wild horses accompanying it. “This is good news,” said the son. “Good news. Bad news. Who knows?” replied the father. The next day the son was trying to ride one of the wild horses when he fell and broke his leg. “This is bad news,” said the son. “Good news. Bad news. Who knows?” replied the father. The next day the Chinese army came into the village recruiting all of the able-bodied young men. Since the farmer’s son had a broken leg they passed him by. “Good news. Bad news. Who knows?”

The point I take from the story is that our perspective is too limited. We must wait to see how the providence of God will use the circumstances of our lives for the divine purpose. Instead of judging ourselves a success or a failure, we should merely strive to be faithful to today’s graces. It is up to God to ensure that all turns out well. Good Friday is necessary for there to be an Easter Sunday.

Just as the pilgrims to Lourdes, everyone is invited to  reach out to our Blessed Mother with the faith that the power of prayer will sustain and heal us and those we love.

¡Que la gracia y la paz del Espíritu Santo estén con nosotros para siempre!

Para todos los cristianos, el tiempo de Cuaresma es de particular gracia. Se nos ha dado la oportunidad de entrar más en lo profundo del Misterio Pascual.

La práctica tradicional del ayuno en tiempo de Cuaresma puede ser en particular útil para entrar en el espíritu de este tiempo. Cuando ayunamos deponemos la ilusión de que podemos de alguna manera satisfacernos o hacernos felices a nosotros mismos. Al contrario, aceptamos el hecho de que es Dios quien nos llena, es Dios quien hace felices a nuestros corazones. No necesitamos agarrarnos a ninguna cosa o alcanzar ninguna cosa para vivir a plenitud una vida rica. Todo lo que necesitamos hacer es crear un espacio abierto en nuestros corazones para que Dios pueda derramar en ellos las gracias que el Señor desee darnos.

La tradición mística del ayuno nos enseña que la vida espiritual es el proceso de despertar a lo que ya existe.  Cuando ayunamos estamos limpiando (sustrayendo) el desorden de nuestras vidas para que podamos reconocer al Dios que descansa en el corazón de la existencia humana.

Permítanme sugerir un ayuno: desistamos de juzgarnos a nosotros mismos. Esta es una historia que me gusta acerca de un granjero en China cuyo hijo se disgustó mucho cuando su caballo huyó. “Estas si son malas noticias”, dijo. “Buenas noticias o malas noticias, ¿quién sabe?” replicó su padre. Al día siguiente, el caballo regresó al granero con una recua entera de caballos salvajes acompañándolo. “Esta son buenas noticias”, dijo el hijo. “Buenas noticias o malas noticias, ¿quién sabe?” replicó el padre. Al día siguiente, el hijo estaba tratando de domar a uno de los caballos salvajes cuando se cayó y se rompió una pierna. “Estas son malas noticias”, dijo el hijo. “Buenas noticias o malas noticias, ¿quién sabe?” replicó su padre. Al día siguiente el ejército chino  vino al poblado a reclutar a todos los jóvenes sanos. Como el hijo del granjero se había quebrado una pierna, no se lo llevaron. “Buenas noticias o malas noticias, ¿quién sabe?”. Lo que quiero resaltar de esta historia es que nuestra perspectiva es muy limitada. Tenemos que esperar a ver cómo la providencia de Dios usará las circunstancias de nuestras vidas para su divino propósito. En lugar de juzgarnos como exitosos o fracasados, nos limitamos a esforzarnos por ser fieles a las gracias actuales. Está de Dios asegurar que todo sea para bien.
